Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify the relative effect of parenting stress, social support, and socio-demographic variables on the parenting efficacy. The subjects were 309 mothers of 3 to 5 years olds from 7 daycare centers in Gyeonggi-do. The mother¡¯s parenting efficacy scale was developed by Choi(2002) and revised by Lee(2006). The parenting stress was measured by Parenting Stress Index/Short Form[PSI/SF](Abidin, 1990) and the social support was assessed by the scale developed by Shin(1997). Parenting efficacy was not related with children¡¯s sex, age, birth order, mothers¡¯ age, or the state of maternal employment: however, the mothers¡¯ education level was related with efficacy of guiding the child¡¯s study. The most powerful predictor was husband¡¯s cooperation and the next powerful predictor
was parent-child dysfunctional interaction. These results imply that parent education program should include fathers and that the role of fathers should be emphasized.
